Soul Leadership and the Desire to Route a Different Journey - Intentions, Passion, Memory and STEM Transformation – A HBCU Perspective

This paper examines how leadership at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) responds to legacies of oppression and enslavement. The paper explores and analyzes the intentions, passions, and memories leaders shared through a series of interviews. Through interviews conducted by The Center for the Advancement in STEM Leadership (CASL), it explores Soul Leadership and proposes a framework using Cultural Intentionality and Conscious Leadership to ignite transformation and broaden participation in STEM education across HBCUs in the United States.

Exploring Our Assets: Nurturing Faculty STEM Leaders through the HBCU Soul of STEM Leadership

This study explores the lived experiences of Black STEM faculty leaders, focusing on their assets, motivations, and values as they relate to the Soul of HBCU STEM Leadership. By examining semi-structured interviews and evaluation reports, the research highlights how historical, social, and institutional contexts influence STEM faculty leaders’ professional roles, practices, and perceptions related to their contributions to broadening participation in STEM, particularly within HBCUs.

Soul of STEM Leadership: Cultivating Care and Conscious Values in STEM Higher Education

Humanizing STEM education broadens participation in science and engineering through cultures of care, requiring conscious, values-based leadership. This study used a conceptual value framework and reflexive thematic analysis. Semi-structured interview transcripts from 18 HBCU STEM faculty were analyzed to model a STEM culture of care and highlight the importance of consciousness in leadership.
